EP 257: Game Changers: Empowering Women and Young Girls in Sport with Former Medalist and GB Rower, Baz Moffat

This week, Angela is in conversation with former Team GB rower, Baz Moffat, about how we can support young girls of all ages in sport much more than we currently are.

Description

This week, Angela is in conversation with former Team GB rower, Baz Moffat, about how we can support young girls of all ages in sport much more than we currently are.

Women In Sport recently discovered that almost half of all teenage girls end up disengaging with sport due to a lack of support and the pressures of school work, amongst other reasons, and in this show, Baz and Angela talk through ways in which we can stop so many potential sports stars from losing their sporting passions.

Key Takeaways

43% of teenage girls who once actively engaged with, and enjoyed sport, are being sidelined in their teenage years, and being made to feel inadequate, compared to just 24% of boys the same age.
Working and training several times a day. Women are not small men, and go through far more in terms of physiological change. Over-stressing the system can be a challenge in itself.
Puberty happens at different ages for different girls. It doesn't all happen at the same time for everyone. Being given the help and time and space to understand their own bodies as they change is vital.
Guidance and support for girls around subjects such as proper sportswear and sanitary products is crucial, and should be done proactively at the beginning of every year, so as to establish support early.

Best Moments

'There is a complex barrier and some deep-rooted negative attitudes that are affecting girls' enjoyment of sport'

'There wasn't much space for me as an invididual'

'That was the big difference that lottery funding made - you're able to do more rest and recovery'

'Girls need to be given the chance to understand their bodies'
