My 8 Favourite Biohacking Products
“What gets measured gets managed.” – Peter Drucker
When it comes to your health, performance, and longevity, I truly believe that tracking and measuring make a world of difference. If you don’t have baseline measurements or you don’t collect data, you can’t really know what’s going on beneath the surface.
This is why I’m so passionate about trying and utilizing certain health and wellness products. The devices outlined below can offer insights that can easily be accessed within the comfort of your own home. In this list, I also added my favourite supplements that I use to improve my productivity, increase my energy levels, and enhance my longevity. I’ve gained so many benefits from these products that I wanted to take the time to share them with you. So, what are my favourite biohacking items?
1. Lumen
The Lumen device measures your metabolic function through your CO2 levels. It allows you to know when your body is using fat or carbs for energy based on what you do and eat throughout your day.
It also adjusts your macronutrient (carbs, fat, and protein) percentages accordingly, helping you become more metabolically flexible. Essentially, increased metabolic flexibility allows you to burn fats and carbs on-demand and seamlessly switch between the two. If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you may have seen me using this device and making links between my activity, food consumption, and metabolic flexibility. So far, I’m pretty impressed and definitely recommend this if you’re looking to improve your metabolism, health, and longevity.
2. Eat Pluck: Organ-Based Seasoning
Animal organs, like liver and kidney, are some of the most nutritiously dense foods on the planet, containing vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, iron, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, and zinc.
Yet, most people don’t particularly enjoy the taste of these foods. (Have you ever really heard many people claim that they love liver? Probably not.)
ENTER: Pluck, an organ-based seasoning.
Pluck has taken these less-than-appetizing organ meats and turned them into a delicious seasoning where you can gain tons of nutrition with a single pluck. The company recommends replacing all kinds of seasoning, including salt and pepper, with this organ-based product for optimal nutrient intake at every meal.
Pluck is also non-GMO, gluten-free, pasture-raised, and keto and paleo-friendly. Combining Himalayan salt, spices, herbs, and organ meats, this is one seasoning you definitely want to try. My family and I have been enjoying it in all kinds of meals, and we can’t recommend it enough!
3. biOptimizers: Blood Sugar Breakthrough
Poorly managed blood sugar can quickly result in afternoon slumps, low energy, variable moods, and even heart and kidney problems. If your goal is to increase your productivity, maintain or increase your energy levels, and improve longevity, blood sugar peaks and valleys can inevitably create various problems and hurdles for you.
The biOptimizers Blood Sugar Breakthrough supplement is particularly useful for those that are carb sensitive (like myself) and those that have insulin resistance. It’s designed to help balance blood sugar levels during meal times, as well as:
- Increase blood sugar intake into the muscle cells over the fat calls
- Improve carbohydrate metabolism
- Promote increased and stable energy
- Reduce the stress response (and hormonal fluctuations) caused by blood sugar variation
- Help manage cravings and mood swings
- And burn more calories as heat
I take two capsules before a carb-heavy meal, which helps with carbohydrate metabolism and stable blood sugar levels. These supplements also offer a subscription program, ensuring you always have them on hand.
4. biOptimizers: Magnesium Breakthrough
Stressed out? Feeling overwhelmed?
Managing your stress is one of the best things you can do for your health. And stress doesn’t just send your hormones and metabolism off balance. It also depletes various vitamins and minerals, including magnesium.
Magnesium plays a critical role in muscle function, nerve function, and energy production. If you’re chronically stressed out, it’s likely that you’re deficient in this particular mineral.
biOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough combines seven types of magnesium for optimal absorption, improved sleep, reduced stress, enhanced relaxation, improved immunity, and strong bones. I take two of these capsules each evening to help with sleep and all of the above. Similar to other biOptimizers supplements, you can order this one on a subscription basis.
5. biOptimizers: Protein Breakthrough
Most women (and men) don’t obtain enough protein in their daily diet. On average, most adults should be aiming for 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. But if your calendar gets filled and your days are jam-packed, this can be difficult to achieve.
For those days, I recommend trying biOptimizers Protein Breakthrough. Right now it’s only available in Canada and the U.S.A. However, it’s a pea-based protein that contains all of the essential amino acids, making it a healthy and nutritious choice.
With adequate protein in your diet, you:
- Support lean muscle growth
- Reduce your food cravings
- Balance your blood sugar levels
- Support good digestion
- Recover faster
- Burn more fat
This protein powder is also vegan, low-carb, soy-free, and gluten-free, making it a great option for a variety of individuals.
6. Veri
One of the best measurements you can take is your blood sugar levels. This can tell you a lot as to how your body is managing and using the food you eat, as well as how your activity levels impact your blood glucose.
Veri is a continuous glucose monitoring device that combines a cellphone app with sensors that you apply directly onto your arm. Through the app, you can obtain instant glucose readings and monitor how your activity and food impact them. The interface of the app itself is also super user-friendly.
In turn, this app and device can help you find foods that work for you and your body, help you achieve sustainable and healthy weight loss, improve your energy levels, and stabilise your blood sugar levels.
My husband and I have even experimented with this device and app together where we’ve eaten the same foods and monitored the results. As someone who is carb-sensitive, it was fascinating to see my blood sugar levels spike with certain foods or meals. Meanwhile, my husband’s blood sugar levels barely moved.
I’ve found Veri to be really useful in helping me determine what foods cause these spikes for me and which foods don’t. I think others could find this really insightful as well. So if you’re looking for an easy-to-use glucose monitoring system, Veri might be just what you need.
7. Wild Kingdom Extract: Reishi Mushroom Extract
Reishi has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. It’s even referred to as Lingzhi, “The Mushroom of Immortality.”
Known as an adaptogen, Reishi helps with:
- Enhancing immunity
- Decreasing stress
- Improving sleep
- Increasing energy
- Longevity
- And improving cardiovascular health.
I use Wild Kingdom Reishi Mushroom Extract on a regular basis, which contains wild-harvested reishi, a full spectrum of water-soluble polysaccharides, and alcohol soluble triterpenoids.
Triterpenoids are the main adaptogen compounds found in reishi. They actually act as a precursor for various hormones, helping the body absorb oxygen better and improving the immune response.
You can either take this reishi mushroom extract via the provided dropper, or add it to your favourite smoothie, beverage, or meal.
8. Wild Kingdom: Chaga Mushroom Extract
The Chaga mushroom is loaded with antioxidants and acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory. This makes it a great biohack for combating stress.
Research shows prolonged exposure to cortisol can actually increase oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by free radicals, which are a natural byproduct of metabolism. However, antioxidants can help reduce this stress, which prevents cellular damage and inflammation.
The Chaga mushroom can also help regulate the immune response, even potentially helping with autoimmune conditions.
I use Wild Kingdom Chaga Mushroom Extract most days. One bottle provides a 50 day supply. This extract is taken by filling up the dropper, then placing the extract under your tongue for 30 seconds before swallowing.
